![]() ![]() So what is the perspective parents have on Snapchat? Although I’m not a parent, from what I’ve heard my parents say and from what I’ve read online when Snapchat is brought up, parents believe that teens are using Snapchat to hide what they’re doing. “Don’t you just send pictures? Can’t you do that with Instagram? Is it like Facebook?” My only reply would be, “You just wouldn’t understand,” because I didn’t think the appeal would make sense to adults. The Parents PerspectiveĮvery time I talk about Snapchat with my parents, they never understand its appeal. This could call for misuse, but honestly, that’s not what my generation ended up doing. News about the app was mainly covering how the pictures you’d send would disappear. That’s where the adult perspective of the app was. All I ever saw about it was that it was used for most inappropriate things such as sexting and sending nudes, which a 14-year-old shouldn’t get involved in. Initially, I believed Snapchat to be something I shouldn’t touch. As I got older, I uncovered other means to connect with my friends. At the time, however, it was all I knew how to use, having just entered the world of social media. Most of it was people ranting about their lives or posting family pictures. The more space, the less room for error, right? I also use 20px gutters since the sides of the phone are harder to tap.At first, I was disappointed with what I found. While the general rule for tap areas on an iPhone is 44px by 44px, when I design I use the Android standard of 48px by 48px. Using my UX knowledge and a little prayer that I don’t have chunky thumbs, I analyzed the sizes of the spacing of this screen. Have my fingers gained weight or are the tap areas for the buttons too small? I cannot think of two drastically different actions: “ I want to leave this conversation” versus “ I want this person to see my face and continue this conversation.” The first question that came to my mind: I cannot count the number of times I wanted to exit the conversation and ended up seeing my face reflected back at me in sheer fear while I look for the close button before they pick up. You see it? The video call button squished right against the back button? This little (but massive panic inducing) flaw is on the top right corner of the chat screen. ![]()
